“Love Myself"

Enhance Body-Positivity in the Far Future

Research Question

How Can XR Technology Enhance Body-Positivity in the Far Future?

- How can virtual fashion shows reshape the future work of models?
- How can avatars enhance fashion models’ self-identity?
- How can VR help fashion customers accept their bodies?

Background Research

The Modeling Industry

In a forever evolving world, the expectations in the modeling
industry feel like they are constantly shifting. But while many are
fighting for a more diverse fashion landscape, a lot of aspects remain
the same; model requirements appear to remain constant.

More curvy models grace the high fashion runway than ever before,
but there is still a long way to go before other stereotypes are broken
and we see a more diverse range of people regularly on catwalks and
in magazines.

Fashion Show and Digital Fashion

Fashion show has become a way of presenting oneself, and it's like a
statement that has been given a new social function.
Bloggers and influencers are fond of uploading their physical and
virtual outfits on social media to promote various individual brands.
Digital fashion provides a solid reason for artists and designers to
commit to creating digital artworks such as virtual clothes.

Concept Statement

In 2060, with the penetration of XR technologies, metaverse is breaking down physical boundaries. The Modeling Industry will have a new work mode where models will choose an avatar that will represent them in the virtual world. Their cheerful catwalk and confidence on the stage convey messages of body positivity.

Our target audience is people in the future who are dissatisfied with their bodies and have body anxiety. When they enter the virtual world to choose the clothes they will wear in the real world they will see the models on stage who look like them. Instead of being led by fashion to view their bodies as a set of problems to be solved, they will learn to accept and appreciate their bodies through the influence of these
inclusive avatars on the stage.

Key Theories

According to Fong's study “Reflecting and shaping the self through avatars” (2017), it is possible that creating an idealized avatar could lead to some degree of self-enhancement, such as using the avatar to protect the individual from future negative evaluations when engaging in self-evaluation.

It follows that the interactivity of the avatar, including control over the appearance and positive embodiment, could be a form of media
that influences the audience (Fong, 2017).
